Troubleshooting Tips

Connection problems

I can't find the person I'm supposed to connect to.

  • If you are connecting using a directory server, make sure that you are looking at the Directory list and not the SpeedDial list.

  • Ensure that you are looking at the correct directory server. The directory server you are logged onto is displayed at the bottom of the BackPak. To log onto a different directory server, click the Directory button and then select a new directory from the drop-down list under the field named, Select a directory.

  • If you still can't see the person in the directory list, they might not be connected yet. You can refresh the directory list view by clicking the Refresh button.

People can't find me.

  • You are not using the correct directory server. To log in to a different directory server click the Directory button and then select a directory from the drop-down list under the field named, Select a directory. You can also type a directory name directly into the Select a directory field if desired.

  • The information for your listing on the directory server is incorrect. To change it click the Local Settings button, and then in the General tab enter the new information under My directory information.

  • Your directory listing may be hidden.  Click the Local Settings button and then under the General tab uncheck Do not list my name in the directory.

I don't want to connect using a directory server

If you do not want to use the directory server to connect and know the IP address of the person you want to call, you can type the IP address in the address field under Initialize Connection.

To find out what your current IP address is, right-click and select About. Your IP address is located in the bottom right of the About dialog box. You can also find your IP address by clicking Start, clicking Run, and then typing WINIPCFG (for Windows 95 and Windows 98), or IPCONFIG (for Windows NT 4.0, 2000 and XP).

When I try to join the meeting, I get a message that says that the host is in another meeting.

The meeting has already begun. Click Yes to join the meeting.

Uninvited participants keep trying to join my meeting.

To stop uninvited participants from joining your meeting, do one of the following:

  • Hide your directory information.  Click the Local Settings button and check Do not list my name in the directory located under the General tab.

  • Turn off automatic answering. In the Preferences list check to see if Automatically Accept Calls has a checkmark next to it. If it does, click it to disable automatic answering.

  • Set your system to "Do Not Disturb". When all the invited participants have joined the meeting, in the list of Preferences check Do Not Disturb. If someone tries to place a NetMeeting call while you have this option turned on, they will get a message that you did not accept the call, and you won't be disturbed during your meeting.

Program sharing problems

Some meeting participants cannot see the shared program.

  • If you have problems sharing a program, check to make sure that you haven't exceeded the recommended number of people in a meeting. In addition, close programs you are not sharing, including Chat and Whiteboard. Also, if another person in a meeting is sharing a program, it may obscure the program you are sharing.

I can't see the program that someone else is sharing.

  • The shared program might be minimized. Check your taskbar to see if there is a button for the shared program.

  • If you are seeing a strange triangular pattern on your screen instead of a window, the person sharing the program might have it covered up with another window.  For example, when a new person joins the meeting, the NetMeeting window pops up and might cover the shared program window. Tell the person sharing the program that you can't see the window they are sharing, and that they need to move the window that is covering it.

  • If you are seeing only a portion of the shared window, or can't see the scroll bars, it's probably because the person sharing has their display set at a higher resolution than yours. Either the host must lower their screen resolution before the meeting, or the person with the lowest screen resolution should share the application. This is particularly important if any of the participants are using laptops, which often don't have a resolution higher than 800x600.

I accidentally shared a file I didn't mean to share.

  • If you share a program, you are also sharing all the menus and toolbars associated with the program. If you allow others to work in the program, this can give people access to other files on your computer, without your having shared them. For example, if you share a Microsoft Word document and allow others to work in it, someone can take control, click Open on the File menu, and open another file on your computer or a computer on your network. To prevent others from working in the program open the Share Programs dialog under Tools, and then click on the Prevent Control button.

  • To stop sharing a program, in the Sharing dialog box select the program and then click Unshare.
